Historical Process of International Relations in the World System Theory of Immanuel Wallerstein

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Khac Nam

VNU-University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Hanoi

Historical process of international relations has been one of the basic points of view in international relations theories. In the study of international relations, there have been numerous approaches to it. One of them is the systemic approach in the World System Theory of Immanuel Wallerstein.

The article presents the main notions in the World System Theory of Immanuel Wallerstein. From this, the article gives some appraisals on the historical process of international relations in the concept of World System Theory. This is the process that has moved by economic development of states in order to establish and develop the world system. The system is divided into the core, periphery and the semi-periphery. This is organized by international labour division and domination of the core. The main contradiction that creates momentum for historical process of international relations is the struggle among states and classes for their development and improvement of their position in international labour division...

The view of World System Theory on the historical process may have some methodological contributions to the study of international relations and to supply several theoretical points for international relations history. Besides, the theory contributes partly to the explanation of several new phenomena in international relations. However, the World System Theory has played a role as the additional approach more than a theory that is able to explain the whole history of international relations.
