Discussions on the “Fate” of the History Discipline in the Draft of the Overall General

Programme of the Ministry of Education and Training

                                                                            Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Vinh

Faculty of History, Hanoi National University of Education

In the new Draft of overall general Programme of the Ministry of Education and Training announced on means of mass communication, the History discipline is put in learning disciplines in "integrated" nature such as Life Around Us, Social Learning (in junior school), Social Sciences (junior high school). At the senior high school level, the History turns into a “subclass” of new discipline: Citizens with Homeland (including Moral Education, History, Defense and Security Education). It can be seen that the History is on the verge of being "wiped out" in the general education programme as an independent discipline. This is a major challenge without any precedent case for the "fate" of the History. In addition, this is unprecedented in the Vietnamese history of education. The focus of the article therefore is to analyze: (i) inadequacies in turning the History into a new discipline: citizens with homeland at senior high school level; (ii) position of the History discipline in the education system in developed countries in the world; (iii) conclusions on the position of the History discipline in the overall general programme of education.
