Dr. Dinh Duc Tien

VNU-University of Social Sciences and Humanities

Diplomatic relationship between Dai Viet (the Great Viet) and Champa from tenth century to fifteen century created historic events and changed two kingdoms’ fates. Activities exchanged by diplomatic missions and envoys of two kingdoms highlighted the complexity and diversification in diplomatic relationship: sometimes tense, sometimes cozy which either provided pretext for military conflicts or restoration of peace following wars.

The individual role of envoys and objectives of each of their diplomatic trips told powers, position and reputation of each kingdom at times.  In this relationship, Dai Viet appeared to be stronger, more overwhelming and outstanding than Champa.  On the contrary, Champa was always at a weaker position and submitted itself to Dai Viet.

However, at times, Champa got tough when Dai Viet was weakening. Diplomatic relationship between Dai Viet and Champa from tenth century to fifteen century clearly featured their faces in Vietnamese medieval history.
