Coping with Chinese Pirates of the Nguyen Dynasty

Dr. Huynh Ngoc Dang

Association of Historical Science, Binh Duong Province

During Gia Long and Minh Mang reigns, the Nguyen army played an active role, in result pirates were basically eliminated. Under the reign of King Thieu Tri and especially King Tu Duc's reign, pirates swept across boards, looting everywhere, both on the sea and on the continent. The situation was bad causing King Tu Duc to join the French navy in wiping out pirates. This is a historical reality of the Nguyen dynasty which should be reconsidered and thoroughly consulted in protecting the sovereignty over seas and islands in present-day Vietnam.
